HOW TO BUILD A DESK

For this wood working project, I needed to build 3 desks for my kids. I couldn't find any suitable desks that would fit into the kids 'office' area so I decided to build my own.

1) The first step was to make the legs from 2" x 4" studs. I also cut off the angled feet.

2) Next, I reduced the width down to 3" wide. This made them more uniform and removed the rounded edge from the wood.

3) To join the 2 pieces and make the 'X', I used the table saw to cut out the slots. Each side gets cut half way so they'll fit together afterward.

4) After joining the legs, I attached a brace to the bottom portion of the 'X'. I also chamfered the edges with a router for style.
5) At this point the legs are built. I stained them to the colour we have in our house and will varathane them later.
6) To build the top, I used one-side-good 3/4" plywood. I cut the desired size, then added a 1" thick border around the entire surface. I put the excess thickness on the upper side so it would accommodate the 1/4" plexiglass inlay afterward.

7) I stained the top piece to match the legs.
8) I attached the legs by bolting them through the top of the desk with nicer looking bolt. I also used a cross brace near the bottom of the legs for stability. At this point I varathaned everything.

9) The first desk in the kids 'office' without the protective plexiglass inlay.

10) With the inlay, all done.
